Wiimote Hip Hop
Given the task of creating a musical instrument given a simple wii-mote gaming controller, creators Andrew Bluff and Karin Senff decided to make a hip hop controller. The instrument lets the user control drums, bass, melody and vocals independently by using simple combinations of button presses and gestural motion. Audio parts are triggered and looped from a bank of samples and can be altered with delays, distortion, chorus effects and a simple vinyl scratch and vari-speed emulator.
The audio samples that are used by the controller can be changed to completely customise the musical possibilities. For this demonstration (3 years after it’s inception), the creators have taken the instrument to the street to see how it performs. Note that many of the samples used in this performance are unlicensed and simply demonstrate the potential of the instrument.
